At the time of the Battle of West Point, Wiley McClendon was 47 years old and a merchant in West Point.  His brother, James W. McClendon, was Mayor and had held that office throughout the war.  Wiley fought in the battle, was captured by Union forces on April 16, 1865, and taken to Macon where he was released with the other prisoners.

        On the official Federal listing of persons captured by Union forces that day, he is classified as a civilian.  His descendants are fortunate that civilian combatants were not being executed.  

        Wiley died later that year on November 11, 1865.  He and his wife are buried in the Reese Cemetery in Lanett, Alabama.
